Well, this is an interesting development.

On February 1, Corus Entertainment announced that their subsidiary, Nelvana, will partner with Sumitomo Corporation. The organization joint venture will work to produce “anime properties with international appeal,” with the ultimate goal being the creation of an original anime project for North America.

Former Cartoon Network President and COO Stuart Snyder will join on the project as a consultant. He’s decribed as a key player in launching the partnership, having “brought the parties together.”

Content creation company Zeroichi is also signing on to the venture, and will assist in producing the “original anime and toy concept.” Zeroichi is helmed by Shigeki Fujiwara, who helped to create numerous major franchises in Japan. Fujiwara’s list of credits include Aikatsu!, Beyblade, Battle B-Daman, and Majin Bone

Sumitomo Corporation is currently partnered with Crunchyroll owners The Cherning Group.
