Sentai Filmworks Licenses Aura Battler Dunbine

Now with 100% less Wandering Perspective Man! (Oh wait, that’s the other show set in Byston Well!)

Earlier today, Sentai Filmworks announced that they acquired the rights to Aura Battler Dunbine. The publisher will release the title on home video and digital outlets in a remastered HD edition.

The remaster is a new print, which was restored from archival stock in high definition.

Aura Battler Dunbine is based on Yoshiyuki Tomino’s Wings of Rean manga. The 49-episode series aired from Winter 1983 through 1984. Yoshiyuki Tomino (Mobile Suit Gundam franchise, Garzey’s Wing) directed the project at Sunrise. Tomonori Kogawa (Tekkaman Blade, Densetsu Kyojin Ideon) providing character designs. The team of Tomino, Kogawa, and Hajime Yatate (the collective name for Sunrise’s staff) are credited with the original concept.

Sentai Filmworks describes the series as:

Based on the novel, The Wings of Rean by Yoshiyuki Tomino, acclaimed writer and director of the popular Mobile Suit Gundam series, Aura Battler Dunbine weaves a rich fantasy backdrop with powerful mechas and complex characters to create a timeless story of good versus evil, sacrifice and love.

Transported from his home in Tokyo, a seemingly ordinary 18-year-old Shou Zama finds himself in a new world known as Byston Well, a country that has been torn apart by overlord Drake Luft. Refusing to participate in Luft’s evil plans, Shou joins the resistance where he uses his incredible Aura Powers to fight for freedom inside a lavender-colored mecha.

ADV Films originally released Aura Battler Dunbine on DVD in North America.
