Oshii will write the story and scripts, as well as work as chief director for the project at Ichigo Animation, a studio that exists as a wholly owned subsidiary to Ichigo.
Mamoru Oshii has been active in the entertainment industry since 1977. He made his debut at Tatsunoko as a storyboard artist for Ippatsu Kanta-kun, then Time Bokan. He moved on to Studio Pierrot, where he would direct Urusei Yatsura in 1981. He would go on to direct the first OVA, Dallos, in 1983. Afterwards, he’d take the helm on the critically acclaimed Urusei Yatsura: Beautiful Dreamer in 1984.
In 1985, Oshii would write and direct Angel’s Egg at Studio Deen. In the late 1980s, he would join collective Headgear as a director, where he would helm the Patlabor TV and OVA series.
In 1995, Oshii directed landmark anime film Ghost in the Shell, which would propel the director to international acclaim. Afterwards, he would work on other celebrated projects, including Jin-Roh (1999), Blood: The Last Vampire (2000), Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence (2004), and the Sky Crawlers (2008).
Ichigo Animation opened its doors on April 4. The organization is being helmed by Yutaka Nakanishi, who will work as representative direct and chairman.
